VIDEOGRAPHY

Good Wedding Videographers are rare and difficult to find. There are many people out there that buy a camcorder and call themselves wedding videographers so please beware of these amateurs.

Capturing event video is totally different than shooting photography of your wedding - but they still go hand-in-hand. Photography and videography require their own set of skills and techniques - you'll want the best of both. The articles here will hopefully help you out when it comes to understanding these significant differences.

YOUR WEDDING VIDEO

WHY VIDEO?

Your wedding video will be one of the most important keepsakes, if not the most important keepsake, of your wedding day. It's the only possession you'll have that will capture the "group dynamics" of your bridal event. Your video becomes part of your history. The beauty of video is the capturing of your wedding day in a dynamic format. It moves, it speaks.

We here at My Wedding Atlanta truly believe that of all the decisions you make regarding your wedding that including wedding videography is the most important. Your wedding DVD will allow generations to come to enjoy your special day. And as time passes, your wedding DVD becomes more valuable and precious to you and your family. When brides ask us why they need a video when they are getting photos taken we like to ask them this simple question,"wouldn't you like the opportunity to view your grandparents or parents wedding day on video?" The answer is a resounding yes.

Not preserving your wedding day on video is denying yourself and generations a chance to relive this major moment in your history. A good video captures your day, but a great video brings back emotions. Only an experienced and skilled video service can produce that.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR VIDEOGRAPHER

Wedding Videography is a considerable amount of work and takes many skills in order to provide you with the absolute best DVD of you wedding day. Videorecording the wedding is only the beginning. There's much more to it than pointing the camera and hitting the record button. Like photography it's a marriage of technology "know-how" and artistic "talent."

LIGHTING:

The ideal videography setting is a wedding venue, be it church, chapel, hotel ballroom or other, outfitted with color corrected lighting, directed at proper angles providing immaculate illumination at all times. You'll seldom find this though.

Photography vs. Videography: The difference here between videography and photography is that a photographer can use a flash that provides a split second of required illumination to produced a sufficiently lit photo. Videographers can use an on camera light and do, but most times they prefer to use ambient lighting to limit the obnoxious glare in the eyes of your wedding guests. Some lighting factors can be adjusted in post edit, but expect your video to be dark in places. When a video is adjusted to be brighter it can leave the final result looking very grainy. When you want the ambient lights down low to create a mood don't expect too much detail in your video.

Worth mentioning: Camera Flashes. camera flashes in your video - to eliminate these flashes from the video is next to impossible - sorry.

AUDIO:

Good audio capture is as important as the video imagery. A wireless lapel microphone and pocket sized transmitter is usually placed on the groom or officiant providing sufficient recording range to capture clear vocal audio during the ceremony.

Your better videographers will use a number of additional audio recording devices to assure the audio is sufficiently recorded. Usually rooms used for wedding events aren't acoustically perfect so depending on the rooms acoustical profile your audio will be affected. Again post edit sound programs can enhance audio, eliminate clicks and pops, obnoxious ambient noise such as air conditioners and if outdoors, wind. Remember that other noises like engines running, road noise, babies crying etc. will be in your video audio.

Photography vs. Videography: Photographers don't have to worry about audio.

Worth mentioning: Churches, chapels and other event rooms usually have a sound system in use to project the voice of the officiant and music (if used). Audio recording directly from their sound system during the ceremony is possible.

CAMERA TAPING LOCATIONS:

Many churches and chapels have wedding advisors of their own, and these employees basically oversee the wedding ceremony. They also oftentimes stipulate areas where videographers can stand (tripod) or move within to capture the wedding. Most times this works out OK and these areas provide the best viewing angles for good video capture, but, this can also be problematic...sometimes these locations are not well thought out and can cause difficulties in getting the shots to best document your wedding ceremony.

Keep this in mind and speak with your advisor to find out where your videographer can stand to get the very best shots. If you voice concern your wedding advisor will be more likely to allow your videographer to adjust locations if necessary.

Photography vs. Videography: Photographers usually don't tripod-mount their cameras during the ceremony, preferring to free-roam and shoot. Videographers on the other hand usually locate their position and stay put.

Worth mentioning: A good photographer will be aware of the video camera locations and have a a good idea of their field of view in order to figure out how to avoid being in the video scene. A photographer who is in and out of your ceremony really takes away from this moment. The best advice we can extend to you is to talk to your photographer and make it clear to him that you wish for him to not block the view of videographer. Good experience photographers can document your wedding ceremony without being "in" your ceremony. One of the best reasons it's a good idea to hire photography and videographer combination packages is that these people work together consistently and understand how to choreograph a wedding shoot and this is especially important.
